Because she is a girl Samah knows she’s special. Samah knows her future is bright, made up of many opportunities within reach, but this wasn’t always the case… Samah was born in Sudan to her then 16-year-old mother, Thuria, who was forced into marriage. To avoid  political dangers in Sudan, Samah and her mother relocated to Egypt. In Cairo they found an exciting  life –  Thuria’s passion for creating hannah tattoos exposed her to an elite cliental made of the rich and famous. Only problem was Samah had no papers to attend school – Thuria would need to move her children once more and immigrate to Canada. The family didn’t know the language but they knew of the opportunities that existed and more importantly, Thuria knew she wanted more  for her daughter. No early marriages, no political strife and only the best education for Samah. Thuria gave up her successful hannah design business and the family embraced the unknown. Initially, Calgary was cold and at times, hard, but for the most part supportive and promising. Canada’s a country and home where Samah could reach her full potential.

We talked at great length with them for the documentary – I was personally inspired by both of them – their determination, faith and strength. I can’t wait for you to see them in the film, but for now I’ll leave you with some pics… Oh, and by the way, I got myself a hannah tattoo!!! Thuria and Samah, you’re amazing.

Signing off with my cowboy hat,
