We are now on our 25th day of what has been a truly inspiring journey. As we have traveled from Ottawa to Halifax, Halifax to Vancouver, Vancouver to Calgary and now finally Winnipeg I wanted to share one observation I have been thinking about over the last month.

As a filmmaker I am always trying to learn more about the world. I have always known the power of social change through documentaries but now more than ever I can see the potential of the Internet as a tool to help create global change. Ten years ago when I was growing up as a young teenager we didn’t have YouTube, Facebook or My Space. If we wanted to get involved in projects we could join groups and clubs but most of us didn’t really know how. Today everything is different. Let’s take this website for example.

If you go to becauseiamagirl.ca you can read inspiring stories of hope both locally and abroad. You can get involved with Plan Canada directly, or even buy a t-shirt that will go a long way in raising funds for girls internationally. And if you really want to know more, you can read the Because I Am A Girl report. While I am a firm believer that going to the library and doing research yourself is a great way to become knowledgeable about the world, having a website like this helps free up time up so we can directly get involved in causes we believe in.

This is why when people tell me one individual can’t make a difference or that they are too busy I am a little taken aback. Come on everyone! If we are already online checking our Facebook or the next cool YouTube video, was can surely sign an online petition for global change.

We have met some amazing young women on this road trip thus far and they all believe it only takes one. Whether it’s Samah, Afnan, Hayley Wickenheiser or YOU, let’s use our new social media community to raise awareness about things that we care about.

Signing off from Winnipeg,

-       Jon
