Maddy and her mom, Sara, set a goal to raise $20,000 to build a residence for school girls in Tanzania.  After pulling off a very successful Mother’s Day Run for Girls this weekend, they did it!

Even though it was a very chilly weekend, 320 participants showed up to run in the 5k and 1k events.  The event was hosted by Rod Black, Maddy and Sara, and the participants heard a presentation from Natalie from the Because I am a Girl campaign.

But Maddy and Sara’s involvement in girls issues didn’t stop when they crossed the finish line.  In September, they will travel to Tanzania to see first hand how the money they have raised makes a difference in the lives of girls.  And they’re also getting ready for the next Markham Women’s and Girl’s Run, so mark May 8th, 2011 in your calendars!

Sara says, “I am so proud of my daughter and our entire committee. We really came together and with the help of our generous sponsors and participants, were able to raise the amount we wanted, to help build the girls school residence in Tanzania. Maddy and I can not wait to meet the girls there in September!”
